Skilful decadal predictions of subpolar North Atlantic SSTs using CMIP model-analogues

چکیده
Abstract Predicting regional climate variability is a key goal of initialised decadal predictions and the North Atlantic has been major focus due to its high level predictability potential impact on European climate. These often in sea surface temperatures (SSTs) subpolar gyre (NA SPG). In order understand value initialisation, justify costs such systems, are routinely measured against technologically simpler benchmarks. Here, we present new model-analogue benchmark that aims leverage latent information uninitialised model simulations make NA SPG SSTs. This system searches through more than one hundred thousand simulated years Coupled Model Intercomparison Project archives yields skilful target region comparable systems. Analysis underlying behaviour suggests origins this skill physically plausible. Such can provide useful for systems within also limits prediction have not yet reached.

Decadal predictions of the North Atlantic CO2 uptake.
As a major CO2 sink, the North Atlantic, especially its subpolar gyre region, is essential for the global carbon cycle. Decadal fluctuations of CO2 uptake in the North Atlantic subpolar gyre region are associated with the evolution of the North Atlantic Oscillation, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, ocean mixing and sea surface temperature anomalies. While variations in the physi...
متن کاملDecline of subpolar North Atlantic circulation during the 1990s.
Observations of sea surface height reveal that substantial changes have occurred over the past decade in the mid- to high-latitude North Atlantic Ocean. TOPEX/Poseidon altimeter data show that subpolar sea surface height increased during the 1990s, and the geostrophic velocity derived from altimeter data exhibits declining subpolar gyre circulation. Combining the data from earlier satellites, w...
متن کاملTwo distinct roles of Atlantic SSTs in ENSO variability: North Tropical Atlantic SST and Atlantic Nio
[1] Two distinct roles of the Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs), namely, the North Tropical Atlantic (NTA) SST and the Atlantic Niño, on the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability are investigated using the observational data from 1980 to 2010 and coupled model experiments. It appears that the NTA SST and the Atlantic Niño can be used as two independent predictors for predicting...
متن کاملDissolution of calcium carbonate: observations and model results in the subpolar North Atlantic
We investigate the significance of in situ dissolution of calcium carbonate above its saturation horizons using observations from the open subpolar North Atlantic [sNA] and to a lesser extent a 3-D biogeochemical model. The sNA is particularly well suited for observation-based detections of in situ, i.e. shallow-depth CaCO3 dissolution [SDCCD] as it is a region of high CaCO3 production, deep Ca...
متن کاملForecasting Pacific SSTs: Linear Inverse Model Predictions of the PDO
A linear inverse model (LIM) is used to predict Pacific (30°S–60°N) sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs), including the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO). The LIM is derived from the observed simultaneous and lagged covariance statistics of 3-month running mean Pacific SSTA for the years 1951–2000. The model forecasts exhibit significant skill over much of the Pacific for two to three seas...
